Letter to Expectant Parents

Dear Expectant Parent,

We realize that you have many options when it comes to finding a home for your child.  And we are grateful that you are taking the time to review our profile.  We understand this can be a challenging time and wish you comfort as you continue with your adoption plan.  We hope this will ease some of your concerns by giving you a glimpse of who we are.  We are Mike and Kristina, although Kristina is more often known as "Kit."  We are high school sweethearts who met on the school bus our sophomore year.  We were married nine years later in the presence of our close friends and large extended families.

We always knew we wanted to have children.  After many years of infertility, our hearts were led to adoption... and to the arrival of our son, Thomas, who was born in March 2010.  Being parents has been the greatest joy of our lives!  We have so much love to share and look forward to growing our family again through adoption.

We believe that children should be raised through love and understanding, guidance and teaching, plenty of patience, and a good dose of humor.  We believe in teaching children from a young age, the wonders of learning, the value of family, and the importance of kindness, tolerance, and respect.  We also believe in providing our children with a good spiritual foundation.  Both of us were raised in the Church- Kit was raised Catholic and Mike was raised Episcopalian.  Mike's Mom is a pastor and she provides us with spiritual guidance when it is most in need.  Today, we remain open in our spirituality and hope to provide our children with options regarding religion and spirituality.

Like many families today, we both work.  Mike is a doctor and Kit works part-time as a mental health therapist and Zumba instructor.  We both have strong work ethics and enjoy our professions, which allow us the opportunities to live a comfortable lifestyle and provide for the future of our family.  While we work hard during the day, we feel that evenings and weekends should be dedicated to family activities.  Kit enjoys spending most of her days at home with Tommy and plans to take off work again when the baby arrives.  When she returns to her job, we have excited grandparents waiting for an opportunity to help out!  Our families are excited for us welcoming a child through adoption.

We live in Western New York, in a suburban neighborhood with several young families.  Our home is nearby to several parks, playgrounds, restaurants, and shops.  We enjoy being outdoors and spend much of our spring and summer days fiddling in our garden, going for long bike rides, barbecuing, swimming, or just spending quiet time on our back porch.  We also love to go on weekend excursions to Mike's family cottage in Canada or to visit family and friends.  In the fall, we enjoy apple picking, pumpkin carving, and visits to the local parks to admire the turning leaves.  Winter fun includes ice skating, sledding, and snowboarding- all of which can be done within a short distance of our home.  Mike grew up playing hockey and is excited to teach our children to skate and play.

We are lucky to live within five minutes of both sets of parents, an amazing great-aunt, our siblings, and their families.  We are frequently at each other's homes for birthdays, holidays, and sporting events, or to just meet up for impromptu get-togethers.  We have four nieces and nephews who look forward to having another cousin to play with!  In addition to family, we are surrounded by a network of close friends, some of whom we have known since grade school.  Several of our friends have formed families through adoption and have an understanding of these special relationships.

We have an open relationship with our son's birth parents and welcome having a continued relationship with you if that is something you feel comfortable with.  We believe that families created through adoption are special and should be honored.  Our children will know their adoption stories and the wonderful ways in which we became a family.  We thank you again for taking the time to look at our profile and wish you the best as you continue with your adoption plan.

Yours truly,
Mike and Kit (and Tommy too!)
